Report says cost of maintenance could soon reach £2m a week, including 24-hour patrols to avert fire risk

The Palace of Westminster will be at risk of a Notre Dame-style fire or a similar catastrophic event if MPs do not tackle the issue of funding refurbishments, a parliamentary committee has said.

Decisions about how and when to begin a full restoration of the building, which is Grade I-listed and a Unesco world heritage site, have been repeatedly delayed amid disagreement over how it should be done and spiralling costs.

Two empires compete to bewitch you in this exhibition that offers a double bubble of beauty. It collides the Byzantine empire, whose capital Constantinople was officially inaugurated on 11 May AD330, with the Ottoman Turks who conquered this great city in 1453 and turned it into Istanbul. The combined glories of two lost worlds – the Ottoman empire was dissolved in 1922 – beget an utterly enrapturing blockbuster. I lost all track of time in this dream city of gold and ivory.

Even the human form is magically transfigured here into mineral and metal. The martyred abbess St Eudokia becomes a Byzantine icon of marble inlaid with coloured glass, wearing a crown of precious stones and an exquisite dress patterned with diamonds and decorated with pearls and emeralds. It is a masterpiece of abstract splendour that looks like a Klimt painting, but this icon can’t have influenced him because it wasn’t excavated until 1929.

You definitely won’t be bored by the TV take on the first of the Dublin Trilogy novels. But you might well feel confused by this Bonnie and Clyde-style caper through gangland Ireland (featuring Aidan Gillen)

Tall Tales and Murder is likely to elicit varied responses from viewers, but boredom will surely be low on the list. This Irish caper – based on the first of the Dublin Trilogy novels by Caimh McDonnell, and written for TV by Stuart Carolan – moves at a mile a minute, taking in disgruntled gangsters; a dysfunctional care home; buried treasure; bedroom cuckoldry; a Paul Mescal lookalike contest and much more. Billed as a Bonnie and Clyde-style escapade, there are hints of Channel 4’s offbeat hit The End of the F***ing World, BBC Scotland’s thriller Guilt, and even a less elaborate Da Vinci Code in this tale of ill-gotten, church-adjacent gains. It comes with much prestige attached, too: Carolan is the man behind Irish TV hit Love/Hate, and the series was co-created by Chris Addison of The Thick of It and Veep fame.

And yet, I’m still unsure that the above mix makes for particularly standout television. It’s entertaining, sure, but in the same way that whiling your day away on TikTok is entertaining, watching weird little vignettes while being hit with a continuous drip-feed of dopamine. Tall Tales and Murder pummels you with a multitude of characters, themes, plots, moods and twists, and feels like reading a choose-your-own-adventure book from cover to cover rather than skipping to the relevant pages. To watch is to gorge on an all-you-can-eat buffet of drama and comedy and action, but perhaps not to feel particularly satiated by any of it.

It had been heavy going for a while, and they had been made to wait, but in the end Bayern were just that bit too good.
