As Trump’s immigration crackdown continues, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s death marks another high-profile killing by ICE officers

Early on Tuesday morning, 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo took his coffee and a meal his wife had prepared for him, said goodbye to his dog, and left the house he built. He drove his white van, picked up three co-workers, and headed towards a construction site to work on some houses.

But Salgado never made it to work. During a “targeted enforcement operation”, officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed Salgado and arrested the three other men.

  • Janse van Rensburg has qualified on residency grounds

  • Henry Slade and Guy Pepper recalled to starting XV

The South African-born Benhard Janse van Rensburg and the Saracens teenager Noah Caluori are both in line to win their first full international caps after being named as replacements in England’s matchday squad to face Fiji on Saturday. Both newcomers have been selected on the bench alongside the Bristol prop George Kloska who is also poised to make his Test debut.

The 29-year-old Janse van Rensburg, who qualified this week on residency grounds having previously been ineligible because of a brief age-grade appearance for South Africa in 2016, is the latest centre to be picked by head coach Steve Borthwick, who has already selected 17 different starting centre partnerships in his 46-Test tenure. “He’s willing to take the ball to the line and throw long passes into space, but also to get between defenders and use his physicality well,” said England’s defence coach, Richard Wigglesworth. “We’ve seen him play well in the Premiership … he’s been consistent for a long time now.”

U.S. and Iran Trade Strikes For Second Night In a Row After Trump Says Cease-Fire Is 'Over'
Published: 2026-07-09 12:43:39 | Created: 2026-07-09 12:42:38
President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the interim agreement to end the Iran war is “over” and threatened new U.S. strikes amid a flare-up of hostilities. When asked about the status of the Memorandum of Understanding, signed on June 17, Trump declared: “I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them anymore." “They’re scum. They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people,” he continued. “If they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s over.”

Iran said it had targeted U.S. assets in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar overnight after the U.S. military struck Iranian assets for a second day in a row.

In a statement carried by semi-official state media Fars, in the early hours of Thursday morning, the Iranian army said it had targeted a Patriot missile interceptor system in Kuwait, an early-warning satellite antenna site in Qatar, and fuel storage facilities in Bahrain with “a large number of various types of attack drones.”

Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense said four missiles and ten drone attacks had been intercepted, with one person left injured by falling debris. Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior issued several warnings to civilians to seek shelter early Thursday. Qatar also issued an elevated “security threat" alert overnight.

Later on Thursday morning, the U.S. Embassy in Jordan publicized a security alert stating that “reports indicate missiles, drones, or rockets are in Jordanian airspace.” Residents were advised to “seek overhead cover and shelter in place immediately.”

Soon after, Jordan’s military said it had intercepted eight missiles fired from Iran. No material damage or injuries were reported.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) launched new strikes against Iran on Wednesday in order “to further degrade their ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”

U.S. forces struck “approximately 90 Iranian military targets,” in addition to the roughly 80 targets they hit on Tuesday. The U.S. strikes left some areas along the Iranian coast without power, with electricity lines in the southeastern Chabahar County temporarily impacted, according to semi-official state media.

Iran's Health Ministry said the U.S. strikes had killed 14 people and injured 78 across five provinces on July 8 and 9.

The traded assaults come after President Donald Trump on Wednesday told reporters at the NATO summit that the interim agreement to end the Iran war is “over.”

The U.S. initially launched strikes against Iran on Tuesday, following attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded by targeting U.S. military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain into the early hours of Wednesday morning. A pattern that was repeated again no less than 24 hours later.

During his flight back to Washington, D.C. from the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump said the U.S. was “winning” and claimed Iran had “called” and wanted to make a deal.

“I just don't know if they're worthy of making a deal. I don't know that they're going to honor the deal. That's the problem,” he told reporters.

Trump also warned, via a social media post, that the U.S. military response “will get much worse” should Iran target any more vessels transiting the Strait.

In the midst of the tit-for-tat strikes, Iran is burying the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday, in the holy city of Mashhad, after days of public mourning ceremonies.

With the Gulf countries once again feeling the volatility of the renewed hostilities, leaders in and around the region have called for de-escalation and restraint.

In a call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday, Qatar’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani condemned the Iranian attacks on vessels.

They “undermine trust, threaten international maritime security, and harm efforts to consolidate regional security and stability,” he said, according to an update shared by Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry equally denounced the Iranian attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait, calling them “a dangerous escalation and an unacceptable violation."

Following a second night of traded strikes, the current status of the U.S.-Iran negotiations remains unclear.

When asked about the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on June 17, Trump told reporters Wednesday: “I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them anymore."

The MoU laid out the terms for an extended 60-day cease-fire, allowing time for further technical talks to take place.

That deadline is set to expire in mid-August, but amid flare-ups of violence and accusations of violations from both sides, it seems little progress has been made.

U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner discussed the Iran deal with mediators in Doha at the end of June, but there were no high-level talks held with Iranian officials.

TIME has reached out to the White House and Witkoff’s office for comment.

Life has colonised every corner of the planet by evolving ingenious survival strategies but these are increasingly being overwhelmed by destructive human activities, this year’s red list of endangered species has revealed.

Many snails, limpets and clams have adapted to life at crushing depths in the oceans on hydrothermal vents where water temperatures can reach 450C (842F). But an assessment for the red list found that two-thirds of the hundreds of mollusc species found only on deep sea vents were at risk of extinction because of deep-sea mining.

Demonstrations at 18 sites set up as radical transformation plan put to board of Europe’s biggest carmaker

Volkswagen’s proposal to slash up to 100,000 jobs and close factories faces a major test on Thursday as they are formally put to its supervisory board, with protests planned at all plants in Germany.

IG Metall, the influential staff union, has organised demonstrations involving shop stewards and union council members at 18 sites at Europe’s biggest carmaker, including its headquarters. It told the chief executive, Oliver Blume, that he cannot “pass the buck for failures of recent years on to the workforce”.

Cross-party group backs call from science and technology committee to look at alternative options, citing ‘serious mistrust’

A second parliamentary committee has urged Labour to scrap Palantir’s £330m contract with the NHS, increasing pressure on the next prime minister over government deals with the US tech company.

MPs on the health and social care select committee want the NHS to cut ties with Palantir and find a replacement for its system, which is supposed to unify and analyse huge amounts of often highly sensitive NHS health data.

Popping the cork for crémant, the affordable alternative to champagne

As sales of sparkling wine continue to soar, one aromatic French fizz is worthy of particular appreciation

It was in the middle of the pandemic that I ceased stashing sparkling wine. There were no special occasions, or occasions at all, really, save for daily episodes of the BBC’s Baby Club with two cabin-fevered infants and the weekly thrill of a veg box. I might have been stockpiling chickpeas, but I was cracking bubbles open willy-nilly because, well, why not?

And I never stopped. The unrelentingly grim news agenda seems as good a reason as any to pop a cork these days, because sparkling wine invariably lifts my spirits. And I’m not alone in drinking more of it: according to a study by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine, sparkling wine sales have grown faster than any other style in recent years, rising in value from €2.3bn to €8.5bn over the past quarter-century. (That said, I might be an outlier on the timing front, because 2020 figures also point to a dip in sales)

First Thing: Second day of US strikes on Iran as Trump says Tehran ‘behaving very badly’

Explosions reported in southern Iran in most extensive exchange of fire since interim ceasefire. Plus the complicated legacy of beat poet Allen Ginsberg

Good morning. The US military carried out strikes on Iran for a second day, hours after Donald Trump said an interim agreement to end the war was “over”. Iranian state media reported explosions in the port city of Bandar Abbas in the strait of Hormuz; in Sirik, another southern coastal city; and the south-western Bushehr province, home to Iran’s nuclear power plant complex. US Central Command confirmed the strikes.

On Tuesday, three cargo ships transiting the strait of Hormuz were attacked, leading to the most extensive exchange of fire between the two sides since the interim deal was signed last month. At the Nato summit in Ankara on Wednesday, the US president said: “Anything that happens is going to happen very fast” and that the latest strikes would not result in “long-term” military action. “They are behaving very badly,” Trump said, accusing Iran of launching drones and a missile at ships.

What are the economic impacts of the renewed hostilities? US stock markets fell on Wednesday, and Brent crude, the global benchmark for oil prices, jumped more than 5% to crest $80 a barrel. The International Monetary Fund lowered its global economic growth forecast to 3%, citing conflict in the Middle East. Jorge León, the head of geopolitical analysis at Rystad Energy, said: “Tanker traffic through the strait of Hormuz has essentially stopped, which tells you more about risk perception right now than any statement from Washington or Tehran.”

Who could replace Platner? Maine Democrats have until 27 July to select a replacement to face Susan Collins in a race widely seen as pivotal to control of the Senate. The state party said it would hold a nominating convention to pick a new candidate. Troy Jackson, Janet Mills, Valli Geiger and Shenna Bellows are among the names in the frame – with Joseph Gedeon profiling them and assessing their prospects in this piece.
