Claims that Trump and Rubio are trying to influence result have parallels with CIA intervention 64 years ago

The year was 1962 and the Kennedy administration was desperate to swing Brazil’s congressional elections against its leftwing president, João Goulart, as a way of countering the supposed communist threat sweeping a region the US considered its back yard.

Historians say that in the lead-up to the vote, the CIA and the Department of State secretly channelled millions of dollars to opposition candidates and a group tasked with spreading rightwing propaganda and stirring up unrest.

Smart ideas for preserving summer fruit | Kitchen aide
Published: 2026-09-01 12:00:57 | Created: 2026-09-01 12:03:57

From fermenting plums in honey and pickling courgettes in vinegar brine to a British take on kimchi, there are many ways to make the most of the warm-weather harvest

What’s the best way to preserve late-summer fruit and veg?
Jess, by email
Fruit, fruit everywhere, so try fermenting it in honey, says Rachel de Thample, author of The Fermentation Year (published in September). “I’m currently looking at a jar of blackberries, but whole plums would be gorgeous, too,” she says, especially when eaten with blue cheese – “or any cheese, really” – meat or fish; you can also use the syrup like maple syrup or cordial. De Thample packs the fruit into sterilised jars and pours in just enough honey to cover it: “If the fruit has a low acidity, add a spoonful of lemon juice or a splash of cider vinegar as well.” Pop on the lid and leave for a few weeks. “It gets fizzy, but it doesn’t get to that explosive stage, because it has quite a concentrated sugar content. It’ll keep for up to a year at room temperature, but I normally pop it in the fridge after a few weeks.”

Kimchi is another option to keep Jess enjoying summer fruits all year round. “In Korea, apples and pears are traditional, but there’s a kimchi for every season and region,” says De Thample, who takes a British approach with a courgette, blackcurrant and strawberry number: “You can use up tomatoes in the paste, too.” Otherwise, if you have plums and damsons, take inspiration from Japanese umeboshi: “That has a high percentage of salt – I use 15% per 100g fruit. Layer the salt and plums in jars and, if it’s really dry, pour over water; otherwise, just crush a couple of the plums so their juices create a brine with the salt.” The brine can then be used like a plummy soy sauce, De Thample says: “Having a few jars stored away always makes me feel like I’m winning.” Damsons are also a dream in flavoured liquors, says Kenji Morimoto, regular Guardian contributor and author of Ferment: “That’s a really nice way to capture their flavour, and all you need is vodka, the fruit and rock [or granulated] sugar.

What should we do with Trump’s monstrous architectural legacy? | Jan-Werner Müller
Published: 2026-09-01 12:00:57 | Created: 2026-09-01 12:03:55

Questions over Trump’s ballroom and other structures might not feel urgent. But when his reign ends, Trumpism must be repudiated

On Monday, a majority on the supreme court found a technical way to overrule a lower court’s imperative to stop work, while not taking a stance on whether the whole enterprise might be illegal to begin with. Preservationists, the majority held, appear to lack legal grounds for filing a suit blocking Trump’s ballroom; that means construction will proceed, even if none other than John Roberts, in a dissent, held that “those responsible” were breaking the rules in deciding “what to build up at the People’s House”. The solicitor general, John Sauer, is on record claiming that 65% of the project is completed (of course, he might have exaggerated – such things are known to have happened in Trump administrations). Either way, it is thus likely that there will be a massive structure next to the original White House; and, given that the ruling will embolden the president dramatically to change Washington DC’s landscape by spending money never approved by Congress, we might be cursed with a triumphal arch as well. All of which raises the question: what to do with a monstrous architectural legacy in post-Trump America?

Some might dismiss the question as a bit of a luxury problem. After all, a war that also demonstrates the ongoing disempowerment of Congress keeps dragging on; ICE continues its cruel day-to-day work; Trump is trying every tactic to make the midterms go his way. But the built environment, and especially the civic landscape of a capital, is never just an afterthought. Buildings and monuments make values visible, as the philosopher Susan Neiman once put it. And the decision to leave Trump’s structures in place as if his reign had just been another normal era in US history is not neutral – just like leaving Confederate monuments in place is not neutral.

At first glance, the crowd gathering outside a music venue in Red Bank, New Jersey, could have passed for a group of sorority rush hopefuls – or Ella Langley fans on their way to the country star’s show. Most of them were under the age of 30. They wore cowboy boots, maxi sundresses and soft, bouncy blowouts, scrolling on their phones outside the doors as they waited for friends to arrive.

But one accessory gave them away: the Bibles they toted. These women were there to pray.

Opposites attract. And spend most of their time arguing. But the love between Cameron and Mitchell Tucker-Pritchett remained strong throughout the 11 years of Modern Family.

Ramírez’s home lies less than a mile from Era Dorada – a goldmining project acquired by the Canadian multinational Aura Minerals in January 2025. After years of inactivity, the project was reactivated this year when the Guatemalan government granted Aura a construction licence.

Announcing rustup 1.29.1
Published: 2026-09-01 00:00:00 | Created: 2026-09-01 11:48:57

The rustup team is happy to announce the release of rustup version 1.29.1.

Rustup is the recommended tool to install Rust, a programming language that empowers everyone to build reliable and efficient software.

What's new in rustup 1.29.1

The headlines of this release are:

  • Concurrency in certain rustup operations has been improved:

    • When running rustup update, rustup will first check for possible updates in parallel. pr#4752
    • When running rustup component add with multiple components, they will be installed concurrently. pr#4790
  • Implicit installation of the active toolchain in rustup-init and rustup invocations has been deprecated where deemed unnecessary and will now produce a warning. pr#4840

    • Please see our blog post for more details regarding this change.
  • rustup doc now supports the --serve flag which allows serving the docs over local HTTP. This should help users with containerized browser and/or rustup setups. pr#4986

  • Installing i686-pc-windows-* host toolchains on 64-bit Windows now requires --force-non-host. pr#4935

  • rustup-init will no longer leave unexpected files on disk after cancelled installations. pr#4996

  • A bug has been fixed which might cause Windows installation to fail when using rustup-init.sh. pr#4756

  • "Target triple" has been renamed to "target tuple" across the project to reflect the new terminology. pr#4743 pr#4827 pr#4834

    • Please note that this is not a breaking change in the CLI since the existing options such as --target are not using this terminology.

In addition, rustup now officially supports aarch64-pc-windows-gnullvm as a host platform. pr#4523

Further details are available in the changelog!

How to update

If you have a previous version of rustup installed, getting the new one is as easy as stopping any programs which may be using rustup (e.g. closing your IDE) and running:

$ rustup self update

Rustup will also automatically update itself at the end of a normal toolchain update:

$ rustup update

If you don't have it already, you can get rustup from the appropriate page on our website.

Rustup's documentation is also available in the rustup book.

Caveats

Rustup releases can come with problems not caused by rustup itself but just due to having a new release.

In particular, anti-malware scanners might block rustup or stop it from creating or copying files, especially when installing rust-docs which contains many small files.

Issues like this should be automatically resolved in a few weeks when the anti-malware scanners are updated to be aware of the new rustup release.

Thanks

Thanks again to all the contributors who made this rustup release possible!

Capsey as keeper is away! I can’t say that was the most conventional method – she lunges across and sticks out one hand in front of slip, rather than moving her feet and getting both gloves to it – but she holds the take. Good bowling from Wong, a bit of swing away, and Tector just places the bat there looking to push square on the off side again.

4th over: Ireland 13-0 (Tector 11, Lewis 0) Almost through! Filer gets the ball swinging into Lewis, so far in that it smacks the pads outside the line of leg stump, then deflects back past the off stump! Lewis still hasn’t scored, and somehow survives. Leg bye.

Late changes to South Africa’s team smacked of mind games, but reinvigorated New Zealand remain in the hunt

The margins are slim in South Africa this past fortnight and not just on the scoreboard. According to aviation experts, one of the two planes flying over the stadium in Cape Town just before kick-off on Saturday came within 12 to 14 metres of hitting the top of the stand which, depending on your perspective, either ranks as highly-skilled piloting or the most gratuitous of matchday stunts.

Something similar could be said, as it happens, about Rassie Erasmus’s ongoing selectorial high jinks. His initial starting XV announced for the second Test bore about as much resemblance to the one that ultimately took the field as Erasmus did to the late, great Dolly Parton, with no fewer than six of the original lineup missing. It had the desired result in terms of South Africa levelling up the four-Test series at 1-1 but was yet another example of Erasmus toying with the game’s supposed conventions.

Saida Tanvir stands inside her partially damaged home near Bari Imam on August 20 in Islamabad, Pakistan. Her son, Azeem Ahmed, 16, died while trying to block a bulldozer from crushing their roadside grocery store over the winter.

The neighborhood is a pilgrimage site, with a shrine to the Sufi saint known as Bari Imam. In the past year, hundreds of homes of the working poor were razed. Residents fear more will be demolished.

‘There’s always a fresh fury’: Tracey Scott Wilson on Black America and her play about a fraudulent journalist
Published: 2026-09-01 11:13:29 | Created: 2026-09-01 11:17:55

As The Story – inspired by a scandal that ended a young Black reporter’s career – makes its London debut, its author explains why, two decades on, it’s more relevant than ever

If our ability to discern fake news from fact is a hot topic today, Tracey Scott Wilson was on to it more than two decades ago. As a child, the playwright’s father trained her to watch the news every night and discuss it with her three siblings. It meant that she was well placed in the early 00s to spot how stations such as Fox News were veering away from objective reporting to become angled towards a given agenda.

By this point a real-life story had been percolating in Wilson’s mind for more than two decades: in 1981, Janet Cooke, a young, ambitious Black American reporter at The Washington Post, had been exposed as a liar. Cooke had just won the Pulitzer prize for her news story about an eight-year-old drug addict, which turned out to be invented. Cooke was discredited, both for her reporting and for embellishing her CV, and was forced to hand back her prize two days after receiving it.

Forest Service chief faces scrutiny over logging ties as Trump plans to scrap protections

Rollback of ‘roadless rule’ expected to benefit companies US Forest Service chief, Tom Schultz, previously lobbied for

Donald Trump this month announced plans to rescind a landmark rule that has protected old-growth forests in the US for 25 years. If finalized, the rollback is expected to benefit the companies that Tom Schultz, chief of the US Forest Service, represented in his previous roles as a timber industry lobbyist and executive, according to research by consumer advocacy non-profit Public Citizen.

The Roadless Area Conservation Rule, more commonly known as the “roadless rule”, was adopted in 2001 to limit development in roughly 45m acres of national forest. Industry interests and Republican representatives have long lobbied for the rule’s rescission, which would open up those swaths of untouched land to road construction, drilling and logging.
