Seal found dead at Beachport in South Australia presages ‘significant losses’, minister warns

A long-nosed fur seal has died from H5 bird flu in South Australia, marking the first confirmed case in a mammal on the Australian mainland.

The seal was found dead at Beachport on Wednesday on the state’s Limestone Coast.

It marks a fresh escalation in the spread of the virus days after the South Australian premier, Peter Malinauskas, announced three mass mortality events on offshore islands involving more than 1,000 greater crested terns.

The federal agriculture minister, Julie Collins, said the seal death was “not unexpected” as the virus begins to spread through the country.

Drive-in cinemas are rare these days. But the last one in Melbourne’s north still draws a faithful crowd

The drive-in demands little of its audience. You can lie down, bring your dog and talk without fear of being hushed. Mridula Amin spent a night at one of the last of a dying breed

Between a funeral parlour and a sink factory, a queue of cars slowly disappears down a driveway. Most arrive with plenty of time to spare – to turn their backseats into beds, tune their radios to the film audio and let children play on the bitumen or finish their takeaway dinner. By the time darkness falls, hundreds of cars are pointed towards a screen that has outlived almost every other drive-in in Melbourne.

“There’s something about watching a film under the stars, in the night air,” says Michael O’Neill, a car detailer who lives in Echuca, a five-hour return trip from the Coburg Drive-In.

Victorian Labor expands on free dental care election promise

The Victorian premier, Ben Carroll, and health minister, Ingrid Stitt, have held a press conference this morning off the back of their announcement yesterday that the Labor government would open 10 free public dental clinics if re-elected in November.

You can’t use a Medicare card for dental unless you’ve got a healthcare card or you are a category of a particular citizen, it is very difficult … I’ve been visiting a lot of dentists over the past few weeks. There [are] waiting lists. People are in enormous, unbearable pain.

This will be a cost of living measure but it will also make sure that we deal with the healthcare of some of the most vulnerable Victorians. This is really going to fill the gap that’s been there for decades.

Arthur Fils blasts past Flavio Cobolli to reach first Masters final in landmark win

  • French youngster beats No 7 seed 6-3, 6-4 in Cincinnati

  • Jessica Pegula battles past Swiatek to reach women’s final

In the middle of a tense, erratic start to a rain-delayed semi-final day in Cincinnati, Arthur Fils found himself locked in defence and miles behind the baseline on his serve at 3-3. He scurried from sideline to sideline, lunging toward the ball at full stretch, seemingly with no real chance of turning things around. As Flavio Cobolli swept to the net with the intention of finishing Fils off, however, the Italian soon learned that his opponent had another gear to reach. From far wide of the court, Fils pulverised a forehand passing shot winner beyond his astounded opponent, drawing a roar from the crowd.

That one point alone provided evidence of the athleticism, explosiveness and sheer audacity that have long marked Fils as such a rare, exciting talent, and it also set the tone for a monumental victory. From that moment onwards, Fils took control of the match and he marched into his first Masters 1000 final at the Cincinnati Open with a supreme performance, defeating Cobolli, the No 7 seed, 6-3, 6-4.

Australia dominate Bangladesh to win second men’s Test in two days – live reaction

  • Mitchell Starc takes 10 wickets as Bangladesh capitulate at Great Barrier Reef Arena

45th over: Australia 184-8 (Green 65, Lyon 15) After that loose over from Hasan, we have Taijul Islam coming into the attack with his left arm orthodox. Green defends the first ball, then rotates the strike to give Lyon a look at his fellow spinner. Just the one run from the over.

44th over: Australia 183-8 (Green 64, Lyon 15) Shoriful resumes and Lyon starts the over defensively. Shoriful throws in a bouncer and then strikes the thigh pad and appeals for LBW, but the umpire isn’t interested and Bangaldesh eventually decide that it’s probably too high to bother reviewing. A maiden from Shoriful.

Good Morning Megan,

The problem is no one is demanding selection by scoring mountains of runs. Looking up something Picky Ponting mentioned yesterday, from the last Shield season of the top twenty-two run scorers only three average 40 or above: Renshaw, Carey and Weatherald.

José Mourinho marks Real Madrid return with late drama and touch of humility
Published: 2026-08-22 23:21:58 | Created: 2026-08-22 23:44:56

The old master is back at Madrid as he begins with celebrations, frustrations and relief in a 2-1 win at Espanyol

José Mourinho says he is calmer now so when the rest of the bench emptied, sprinting down the touchline to celebrate the 90th-minute goal that finally delivered victory on his first game in charge of Real Madrid in 4,380 days, he did not set off with them. Instead, he clenched his fists, got to his feet and walked down the touchline behind the subs, watching them head, shouting, towards Carlos Espí. As they piled on down in the corner, he pulled over his captain Fede Valverde for a word. Which might just have been: phew.

For all those stars; for all that Mourinho’s main task might just have been to find a way to fit Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham together; for all that he had introduced Yan Diomande, the most expensive player in the club’s history, it was a 21-year-old, unknown six months ago and unexpectedly signed from Levante, who got the goal that secured victory upon the coach’s second coming.
