‘Traitors in every family’: Hungary to unmask communist-era informants and confront past

From 1945 to 1989 security police relied on tens of thousands of spies to suppress dissent. To rebuild trust, their files will finally be made public

Hungary’s new government will on Wednesday reveal the names of tens of thousands of state informants from the communist era in an attempt to confront the past and rebuild public trust.

From 1945 to 1989, Hungary’s communist state-security services relied on an extensive network of informants to monitor society and suppress dissent. Some were blackmailed or coerced into reporting on neighbours, friends, colleagues and even family members; others were recruited through promises of various advantages.

‘Sharper, longer slowdown’ predicted for Australian economy as fifth interest rate hike looms

Australia’s central bank expected to hit mortgage holders again on Tuesday, as war in Middle East combines with collapsing house prices

Australia’s economy is set for a “sharper, longer slowdown”, major bank economists say, as the Reserve Bank is forced to keep interest rates higher to rid the nation of persistent inflationary pressures.

The RBA is widely expected to hit mortgage holders with a fifth rate hike on Tuesday, in a move that will push the cash rate to its highest since 2008 amid rising worries the economy could even be tipped into recession.

Pay Attention by Laura Kuenssberg review – a BBC reporter’s howl of frustration
Published: 2026-11-02 07:00:35 | Created: 2026-11-02 07:14:03

After more than two decades of studied neutrality, the journalist delivers some home truths about modern politics

Laura Kuenssberg always swore she would never write a book. Amid all the vitriol hurled her way, the BBC’s political editor turned presenter has largely kept her counsel. She rarely complained even when she needed security to do her job unobstructed at Labour party conference under Jeremy Corbyn, or had to run the gauntlet of aggressive Brexit protesters outside parliament, or when a creepy unnamed minister tried to inveigle her into his hotel room for what an appalled Kuenssberg concluded was intended to be a threesome. Knowing everything she does is minutely parsed for bias, she keeps her cards close to her chest. Until, apparently, something snapped.

Pay Attention is a muted but heartfelt howl of frustration with politicians “who have looked like an absolute shower for a long time” but also, sotto voce, with voters, who she evidently wishes would occasionally take things more seriously. Having covered Westminster since the late noughties, Kuenssberg brings all that weight of experience to bear in spelling out just how far the abnormal is now becoming normalised in British politics.

Ana Ts’uyeb’s poetic film celebrates the resilience of Indigenous women while exploring the possibility of a different future

Shot in her home village of Naranjatic Alto in the Mexican highlands, Ana Ts’uyeb’s documentary debut is a stirring ode to the courageous women of the Indigenous Tzotzil community. The film centres on three important figures in her life: her mother, Margarita; her aunt, Juana; and her sister-in-law, Faustina. Each is from a different generation, yet they have all suffered at the hands of patriarchal violence.

The patterns of systemic abuse and disenfranchisement are startlingly similar. All three women recall past opportunities to advance their education, hopes and dreams that were squashed by fathers and other male relatives. Also rampant are physical and psychological abuse. There’s a sobering matter-of-fact tone to their reminiscence; their unfortunate experiences appear to be a common reality endured by many Tzotzil women.

With just a few short hours of daylight, the usual boundaries marking time fall away in Abisko, one of the most reliable places to see the northern lights

Looking over the edge of the snow-smoothed canyon down to dark rushing water, we thought we saw a moose or a reindeer, but it could have been a rock. The light was fading fast so it was hard to tell. It was time to turn back; we didn’t want to get lost in the wood, or fall into the river. By the time we’d retraced our steps to Abisko, the blue world had turned to black and dust-like snowflakes whirled around the little village. Back in our hotel room after our expedition, I looked at my phone – it was only 2pm!

Travelling to the Arctic Circle in winter had always been a dream, but when I realised the sun wouldn’t get above the horizon on my holiday, it made me twitchy. I usually pack my limited annual leave as tightly as I pack my working life. I was already using up three days’ holiday travelling by train from London to Abisko. How would I make the most of my time there with barely any daylight?

A new start after 60: At 26, I saw my dream Porsche. At 68, I built one from scratch

Bill Drysdale could never afford the sports car he fell in love with as a young man. So when he retired, he went to night school to learn welding, and began assembling it, bit by bit ...

When he was 26, Bill Drysdale saw a Porsche 904 at Silverstone racetrack and fell in love. “One day,” he vowed, “I will have one of those.” As the years went by, the price of Drysdale’s dream car rose above £1m. “I realised I was never going to be able to buy one.” But when he retired, still harbouring the dream, he thought: “Why don’t I make one?”

Drysdale grew up in Wigtown, Scotland, and cars were in his blood – his grandfather was chauffeur to the local creamery manager, and he first saw a race with his father, when he was 12 – around the time that his mother went into hospital with multiple sclerosis. Drysdale, an only child, grew close to his father. At 14, he taught him to drive. Together they’d huddle in the kitchen to listen to the Le Mans 24 Hour race on the radio.
