Christine Hunsicker, former CEO of CaaStle, gave investors falsified documents that overstated profit and cash reserves

A fashion tech founder was sentenced to five years in federal prison for her involvement in a $300m “fraud scheme” spanning from 2019 to 2025, the Manhattan US attorney’s office announced on Thursday. Christine Hunsicker, 49, was also sentenced to three years of supervised release.

Hunsicker, the founder and ex-CEO of CaaStle Inc, had pleaded guilty this March to one count of securities fraud in relation to a scheme that “defrauded hundreds of investors”, authorities said. Her attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A man in Virginia was hospitalized with a brain injury and severe bruising all over his face after he was arrested by US immigration agents, according to his lawyers, who shared photos and medical records with the Guardian.

José Mejía Hernández, 45, was walking to a bus stop in Arlington on the morning of 11 August when two agents got out of an unmarked vehicle and started chasing him, according to one of his lawyers, Margaret Hellerstein. The man recalled being hit by some kind of stun gun, but did not remember what happened after that, only waking up hours later in the hospital, Hellerstein said.

Речь идет о том, что мы действительно знаем и что уже надежно установлено. В первом томе мы занимаемся классической физикой. Но классическая физика позволяет продвинуться очень далеко. Она ведет нас не только через Ньютона и Галилея, но и вплоть до Эйнштейна. Поэтому мы рассматриваем специальную теорию относительности, общую теорию относительности и черные дыры. Еще одна особенность этой книги заключается в том, что в ней есть уравнения. Существует множество книг, которые пытаются объяснять основы физики с разной степенью глубины и увлекательности. Но книг, занимающих промежуточное положение между обычным научпопом и учебниками, не так много. Научно-популярная книга обычно старается обходиться почти исключительно словами, аналогиями, метафорами и, возможно, несколькими схемами, чтобы объяснить вам происходящее. Welcome to The Logoff: The Trump administration’s meddling with the US military is getting more direct — and potentially more dangerous. 

What’s going on? Fresh on the heels of coverage last week about the plight of the USS Abraham Lincoln (now on its way home), a flurry of recent stories underscores just how much the Trump administration is micromanaging the Pentagon. 

Last week, President Donald Trump directed the Defense Department to overhaul the aircraft carrier mechanism for launching jets — by reverting from electromagnetic catapults to old-fashioned steam catapults.

And on Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Army is axing its new drone assault battalion, which was established in January. The decision to do so comes from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s new acting chief of staff of the Army, who took over the role after Hegseth forced out its previous occupant this spring.

What’s the context? Neither of these moves seem poised to help the military succeed at its core objectives. As naval expert Bryan Clark pointed out Wednesday in the Washington Post, the catapult switch won’t only limit the next generation of aircraft carriers, but cost an exorbitant amount of money — contrary to Trump’s insistence that steam is “much less expensive” — and delay the rollout of new ships (badly needed, as the Lincoln debacle proves). Trump may also name one after himself.

If possible, the demise of the drone unit makes even less sense. Innovative drone designs and tactics are revolutionizing warfare in Ukraine and elsewhere; being ahead of the curve on these changes has allowed Ukraine to hold its own against a numerically superior opponent.

And it’s very clear that the US hasn’t mastered these tactics yet: As the Journal reported last week, Ukrainian drone operators flattened the US in war games held earlier this year.

Why does this matter? To be clear, Trump is the commander in chief. None of this is beyond his authority as president. But the steam catapults in particular are a strange obsession that would normally be well below his pay grade, and none of it gives the impression of a steady hand at the rudder.

Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan was briefly taken to a hospital in the country’s capital on supreme court orders after weeks of uproar about his deteriorating health.

Khan, 73, was transferred to the hospital in the early hours of Friday, but then moved back to Adiala prison in Rawalpindi after a ⁠few hours, a spokesperson for his party said on Friday.

A 21-year-old recent college graduate was behind an anonymous website that put out widely shared fake election polling in Wisconsin, Nevada and California, the Guardian can reveal.

The website, Median Strategies, abruptly shut down and withdrew its polling earlier this week following questions from a reporter from the Los Angeles Times. In an unsigned statement, it described a “short-term social experiment” to examine how fake polling “could enter and spread through the political information ecosystem without independent verification”.

Это происходит из-за того, что где-то по дороге бизнесовая задача внедрения подменяется технической — и подмена эта остаётся незамеченной, напоминая классический монолог Аркадия Райкина про пиджак:

«Перейти со старой системы на новую», «нам нужен Честный знак», «старая версия снимается с поддержки» — вот типичные формулировки, под которыми скрывается пустая трата десятков миллионов рублей. По частям, вроде, всё чётко, а в итоге — теряется 90% смысла автоматизации.
