Node.js.

Harry and Meghan’s security funding on UK return is private matter, Burnham says

Prime minister wishes couple well in their move back from the US to a non-royal residence outside London

Security arrangements for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex while living in the UK are a “private matter”, Andy Burnham has said, after news that Harry and Meghan intend to relocate to Britain from the US this month.

The UK prime minister refused to be drawn on security funding, saying: “This is a private matter. It’s a matter for Harry and Meghan, and we wish them well in the moves that they’re making.”

There is nothing scientific about The Great ADHD Myth? ‘documentary’ | Gina Rippon
Published: 2026-08-20 12:18:28 | Created: 2026-08-20 12:34:55

Channel 4’s programme wastes a chance to ask important questions about how ADHD is diagnosed and treated, instead indulging in unscientific methods and conspiracy theories

  • Prof Gina Rippon is emeritus professor of cognitive neuroimaging at the Aston Brain Centre, Aston University

When Channel 4 announced that it would air a documentary titled The Great ADHD Myth?, an outpouring of fury followed. Despite this, I set out to approach it as a scientist – not just as a scientist whose own work has dealt with developmental disorders, but as someone who has enormous respect for the scientific process and for the importance of evidence-led debate.

Channel 4’s press release claimed the documentary sought to determine whether attention deficit hyperactivity disorder was a “genuine neurodevelopmental disorder, or a social construct”. At one level this is a brave enterprise. ADHD is recognised worldwide as a disorder, by the World Health Organization and our own NHS among others. Estimates suggest ADHD affects roughly 8% of children and adolescents and about 3% of adults worldwide. To overturn this consensus would require robust, reproducible findings capable of explaining away decades of genetic, developmental and clinical research. The press release described the documentary as “science-led”, which hinted at just such an enterprise. Was it really science-led?

Prof Gina Rippon is emeritus professor of cognitive neuroimaging at the Aston Brain Centre, Aston University, and the author of the books The Gendered Brain and The Lost Girls of Autism

Eleni Petinos tells inquiry her sacking as a minister in Dominic Perrottet’s government was potentially motivated by her reluctance to get rid of the building commissioner

The former New South Wales fair trading minister Eleni Petinos has given evidence at a corruption inquiry that she may have been used by fellow Liberals to try to get rid of the building commissioner David Chandler, recounting numerous attempts in 2022 to persuade her he was “dodgy” and should be sacked.

She has also told the Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac) inquiry that her subsequent sacking as a minister in the Dominic Perrottet government in July 2022 – allegedly for bullying staff – was unfair and potentially motivated by her reluctance to sack the building commissioner.

Double-elimination, reseeding and 20 teams: MLS plans potential overhaul of playoffs

  • Format would resemble that of Australian rules football

  • League will ditch conferences for five-division setup

Major League Soccer is planning a significant overhaul of its playoff format, multiple league and club sources told the Guardian this week. The changes, which would debut in 2028 alongside the league’s shift to a fall-to-spring schedule, could include a “double-elimination” component and see as many as 20 teams feature. Sources spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the league’s plans.

The Guardian has viewed a potential schedule for the new format, in which the playoffs start in late April and unfold over roughly three weeks with MLS Cup being played on Sunday 21 May 2028. The changes to the playoff format would pair with long-reported changes to MLS’s regular season, with the league going to a five-division setup in place of its current Eastern and Western Conference structure.

When it comes to rosé, pink doesn’t have to mean Provence
Published: 2026-08-20 12:00:51 | Created: 2026-08-20 12:04:56

From Morocco to Monmouth, there’s a whole world of blushing rosé wines to discover

Hello, from rosé season, the only time of year I order wine like a patriarchal septuagenarian. For this fleeting moment in the wine-drinking calendar, questions are out and assumptions are in; everyone’s happy to drink pink – specifically, pale, dry and berry-crisp Provence rosé. Blushing like cheeks in a summer romance, pale rosé captures something of the hazy holiday spirit: easy, fun, objectively delicious. The liquid equivalent of chips with ketchup, it’s a safe bet.

Finding a wine that almost everyone approves of is close to the holy grail – and if Provence has cracked it so everyone’s happy, why deviate? But unless you’re in primary school, chances are you wouldn’t eat chips at every meal, and I’d apply the same logic here. We’re human! We’re omnivores! And even within the category of rosé, there is a world to discover beyond the Provençal style that dominates supermarket shelves. What’s more, the likes of Whispering Angel may make decision-making easy, but they also command some hefty prices (£22.50 on Ocado at the time of writing).

As weight-loss drugs gain popularity in the US, brands are scaling back their ranges – and frustrating customers

In March 2023, the model, activist and writer Tess Holliday announced that she had been working as a size and inclusivity consultant for H&M. The fruits of their partnership felt like “one of the most meaningful things that I’ve done in my career”, she told US Vogue at the time. The fashion juggernaut had committed to an expansion of its sizes, from XL to 4XL, and to increased body diversity of its models.

This bucked a trend, coming at an otherwise gloomy time for plus-sized fashion. By 2023, the fashion industry was in the grips of an Ozempic-fuelled celebration of skinny bodies, after its brief flirtation with curves during the body positivity movement of the late 2010s.

Ready for Go 1.27 on Day One
Feed: The JetBrains Blog (https://blog.jetbrains.com/feed/)
Published: 2026-08-20 10:19:21 | Created: 2026-08-20 11:58:55

Go 1.27 is here, and the release notes have plenty to explore. Language updates include generic methods, promoted field names in struct composite literals, and improved function type inference. Beyond the language itself, Go 1.27 expands go fix with new modernizers and adds a profile for finding goroutine leaks. These updates touch many parts of everyday development.

GoLand 2026.2 recognizes the new language features in the editor, brings the go fix modernizers into code analysis, and can capture and analyze the new profile in its profiling tools. The GoLand team also added Go 1.27 context to the Modern Go Code Guidelines, so AI coding agents can handle the same language and API changes.

To explore these changes with the Go community, join the Go 1.27 Release Party on August 25, 2026, from 4:00 to 5:30 pm UTC (9:00–10:30 am PDT). The online event will include:

  • An overview of the main changes from the Go development team.
  • Practical demos.
  • Live coding.
  • A look at how GoLand supports Go 1.27.
  • A Q&A session.

Go educator Jesús Espino and GoLand Developer Advocate Ainsley Clark will host the event at The Blue Gopher, an online community space where Go developers can meet, talk, and spend time together.

Explore what’s new in Go 1.27

To help you discover the latest language highlights, GoLand also includes a dedicated What’s New in Go 1.27 page on the Welcome screen. It provides a guided overview of the new language and standard library features so that you can quickly see what has changed since the previous release.

Modernize your code with the official go fix tool

Adopting a new Go release isn’t only about writing new code. Existing codebases can also benefit from improvements in newer versions of the language and its standard library.

Go 1.27 expands the official go fix tool with additional modernizers that help you replace older patterns with their preferred modern equivalents.

GoLand 2026.2 brings these official recommendations directly into the editor.

Running go fix from the command line is useful for updating an entire codebase, but this is usually done separately from your daily coding tasks. You have to run the tool explicitly and then review its changes outside the context where you first encountered the code.

GoLand displays the same modernization opportunities as inspections directly in the editor. You can see why GoLand suggests an update, review it next to the affected code, and apply the corresponding quick-fix without interrupting your workflow.

GoLand supports all go fix modernizers, including those added in Go 1.27:

  • Generic iterator improvements
  • Safer unsafe pointer arithmetic
  • Improved atomic types
  • Embedded composite literals
  • Slice modernizations
  • Other official go fix transformations

After you review an update in one file, GoLand can analyze the rest of the project and collect every applicable modernization in the Problems tool window.

You can review each suggestion, inspect the generated diff, or apply updates across your project in bulk.

In addition, GoLand now lets you enable go fix as a pre-commit check (disabled by default). Before each commit, the IDE runs the official Go modernizers and automatically applies any available updates. This helps teams keep their codebases aligned with the latest Go recommendations as new modernizers become available.

Find goroutine leaks with the new Go 1.27 profile

Concurrency issues are often the hardest performance problems to diagnose. A goroutine may remain permanently blocked long after the original synchronization mistake occurred. This delay makes leaks difficult to identify from the running application alone.

Go 1.27 introduces a new Goroutine leak profile, and GoLand 2026.2 supports it from day one.

The profile reports goroutines that are permanently blocked because the synchronization primitive that they are waiting on, such as a channel, sync.Mutex, or sync.Cond, has become unreachable.

You can capture and analyze goroutine leak profiles alongside CPU, memory, mutex, block, and goroutine profiles directly in the Go Performance Optimization tool window.

The new profiler integrates with the redesigned profiling workflow in GoLand. You can switch between flame graphs, call trees, graph visualizations, and editor gutter annotations to find the source of a leak.

If your application is already running in production, you can import an existing pprof profile into GoLand and jump directly from the captured profile to the corresponding source code.

Help AI write modern Go 1.27 code

AI coding assistants can help you write code faster, but they often lag behind the latest Go releases. Even when they generate correct code, they may rely on outdated idioms or miss newer language features and standard library APIs.

GoLand addresses this with the updated Modern Go Code Guidelines for AI agents.

The guidelines provide supported AI coding agents with additional context about Go 1.27 language features, new standard library APIs, and current best practices. They also take your project’s Go version into account, helping agents generate code that uses features available for the version specified in your go.mod file.

As new Go releases appear, the guidelines are updated to help AI coding agents generate code that follows the latest Go recommendations.

Update to GoLand 2026.2 to use the latest Go 1.27 features from day one. If you’re new to GoLand, start a free trial and explore the full development workflow.

Happy coding!

My coastal road trip confirms that seaside food still beats fine dining

A family holiday shaped by salt air, seagulls and unpredictable weather proves that the seaside serves a kind of joy no restaurant can engineer

Sign up here for our weekly food newsletter, Feast

There are few things more powerful than the smell of salt, vinegar and hot oil carried on a sea breeze. Or sugar-coated doughnuts, still warm in a grease-stained paper bag. Such distinctly British perfumes are the smell of my summer, because my family and I are road-tripping through the UK and Ireland. We are embracing as much of coastline as we can, while battling seagulls and unpredictable weather along the way. And, unlike the carefully curated dining experiences we seek on holidays abroad, seaside food has always been wonderfully simple. It is rarely elegant, but it is pure comfort and nostalgia.

First up, fish and chips, in my opinion, they remain the undisputed king of Britain’s coastal cuisine. Every seaside town insists that theirs is the best (so far, the finest I’ve tried were in Yorkshire, but I am prepared for that to change on this holiday). If you are at home this summer, or not near a British seaside, you can, of course, have a go at making your own. Tim Hughes’s and Felicity Cloake’s recipes are as authentic as they come, along with a crisp beer batter for firm white fish. For a slight twist, Yotam Ottolenghi’s fish and spiced sweet potato chips is an excellent, inspired dish. Either way, all options deliver.

Three continental confederations accused Infantino of “deception” in an open letter last week over the manner the plan was devised and presented, and Uefa, European football’s governing body, is intent on boycotting Fifa events having “lost confidence” in his leadership.

Alessandro Rapinese denies he is waging personal vendetta against cyclists amid a public backlash

Alessandro Rapinese’s ban, which comes into force in September, targets about 30 streets and means cyclists, whether on e-bikes or push bikes, will have to dismount and walk through those areas.
