‘We have effing unbreakable love’: how the maverick Natalie Nakase led the Valkyries to WNBA glory
Published: 2026-11-01 16:10:48 | Created: 2026-11-01 16:25:03

A coach shaped by her circuitous basketball journey was uniquely suited to building the trust that made Golden State champions just 534 days after their first game

The mighty, miserly Golden State Valkyries won their first WNBA title on Saturday night with a point guard Dallas had given up on and cast aside, a starting forward who had been waived five times and a late-blooming All-Star once passed over by every team in the league. That made them a fitting match for their coach. Natalie Nakase has pieced together a basketball life on making small openings count, turning a walk-on place at UCLA into a scholarship and an unsolicited scouting report into a coaching job in Japan’s top men’s league.

The Valkyries’ nerve-shredding 68-63 fightback over the Atlanta Dream in Game 7 did more than make them the fastest expansion team in major North American professional sports history to win a championship – as 45-1 preseason longshots in their second season of existence. It was proof of concept for an organization that gave overlooked players the resources, responsibility and trust to become champions – and enlisted a leader whose own circuitous journey had taught her what those things could unlock.

Forget maxxing your life. 2027 must be the year we relax – and start minning | Polly Hudson
Published: 2026-11-01 16:00:15 | Created: 2026-11-01 16:10:05

Maxxing is selfish, desperately try-hard and often futile. Instead of pushing your endeavours to the limit, minning means doing them less, if at all

Public service announcement: fellow citizens, we have maxxmaxxinged. It has been close for a while, but now we have gone over the edge – reached, and passed, maximum maxxing. The tipping point was a week in which we saw reports of Namemaxxing. If you can’t decide between two baby names, pick them both. Suggestions included blending Maeve and Avery to create Mavery, or Leo and Giovanni to make Leovanni – Futupid. Then Dictionary.com revealed its word of the year and, yes, you guessed it: maxxing. It’s fully exhausting, in every way, but mainly in that -maxx has been fully exhausted. For the good of us all, 2027 has to be the year of minning. (The second “n” is important, otherwise pits may be deluged.)

Maxxing is selfish, desperately try-hard and often futile – surely nobody who ever set out to funmaxx achieved it (see: New Year’s Eve), not even Dua Lipa. Minning is much more noble: it’s about making the world, rather than only yourself, better. Instead of pushing your endeavours to the limit, it means doing them less, if at all.

A great picture can have an immediate and visceral effect on a viewer, as if bypassing thought. But a huge amount of thinking goes into selecting and sourcing them, and researching their backstories

Can photographs still exert power in an age when millions of pictures are taken and shared every minute, and when a viewer’s first response is to question whether an image is even real?

Every few months, a team of editors on the Guardian’s Saturday magazine puts together a special photography package in print and digital formats. It features photographs that don’t just stop the scroll, they have also prompted the rewriting of history books. They are the kind of images that have changed the world in some way or radically shifted people’s perceptions.

Claude Code.

And when they don’t, they’ll run like mad to recover it, stretching play and passing forwards, facilitating that by conserving energy every now and again when Nyoni slows the game down.

In particular, I expect they’ll ask Bradley Barcola to target the space left when Riccardo Calafiori goes off on adventures, with Alexander Isak pulling away for cut-backs and shooting quickly with little backlift, while Florian Wirtz looks to slip passes in behind – if he can work quickly enough in the maelstrom of the match.
