Country’s second fatal school shooting in two months took place in southern city of ⁠Zamboanga

A student livestreamed himself shooting and killing another pupil in a classroom in the southern Philippines before taking his own ⁠life, ​the second school attack in the country in less than two months.

The shooting took ⁠place at a school attached to Ateneo de Zamboanga University in the southern city of ⁠Zamboanga, a Catholic private institution in western Mindanao. Zamboanga city’s mayor, Khymer Adan Olaso, told the DZMM radio station that the ‌shooter “managed to enter carrying a high-powered firearm and a .45-calibre pistol”.

При этом Sunarius не переносит средневековых наёмников в пустошь буквально. Он берёт знакомые идеи и собирает из них свою RPG про людей, которые пытаются выжить между городами, рейдерами и голодными монстрами.

Обычная поездка здесь может выглядеть так.

Отряд берёт задание и выезжает из города. На дороге его перехватывают рейдеры. Один боец уходит в укрытие, второй пытается спрятаться, а целитель остаётся позади. Сначала план работает. Потом главный стрелок получает оглушение и пропускает ход. Рейдеры прорываются вперёд. Вместо атаки приходится лечить раненого и спасать бой, который минуту назад казался лёгким.

Победа всё же остаётся за игроком. В добыче лежат винтовка, хорошая броня и запчасти. Места на всё не хватает. Игрок долго выбирает, оставляет броню и забирает винтовку.

Через несколько минут новая винтовка вместе с остальными вещами перегружает отряд. Машина едет медленнее, топлива почти нет, а впереди появляется чужой патруль.

Очень похоже на Battle Brothers. Только вместо сломанных копий здесь лазерные пистолеты, вместо лошадей джипы, а за ближайшим холмом может стоять кибермамонт.

В этой части мы возьмём первый из пропусков BLIS — микроядро sgemm; сначала зафиксируем форму аккумулятора 32×32 в четырёх тайлах ZA, затем разберём горячий цикл по K, потом эпилог с alpha, beta и ловушкой NaN, а в конце посмотрим, какие числа производительности даёт именно это ядро. Следующая часть оставит структуру почти той же, но заменит геометрию тайла и условия существования ядра.

Агрегаты в PostgreSQL не очень-то эффективны. Это особенно заметно в сравнении с SQL Server в сценарии, где частичная агрегация не помогает: когда агрегация только подготавливает данные для запроса, обрабатывая большой поток строк и на выходе получая ненамного меньший набор групп и посчитанных по ним агрегатов. Хуже всего приходится типам переменной длины. И здесь характерный пример — SUM(numeric). Встроенные агрегаты обязаны обрабатывать значения в самом общем виде, тогда как на практике данные часто ограничены: например, в БД 1С все numeric имеют фиксированный масштаб.

Отсюда возникает идея оптимизировать агрегаты, подстроив их под конкретные условия эксплуатации. Раньше это было возможно только в форке PostgreSQL. Однако недавно David Rowley добавил в ядро любопытный инструмент расширения SupportRequestSimplifyAggref (коммит 42473b3b31, PostgreSQL 19): теперь можно предоставить планнеру кастомную логику трансформации агрегата через механизм функций поддержки планнера (prosupport). Сам механизм существует ещё с PostgreSQL 12, но до агрегатов добрался только сейчас. В ядре новый запрос применяется скромно: заменяет COUNT(1) и COUNT(col) по NOT NULL-колонке на COUNT(*). А вот расширению он позволяет сделать с агрегатом во время планирования практически что угодно. Это открывает пространство для интересных технических решений.

Здесь я предлагаю посмотреть, как схема с преобразованием агрегата работает на живом и полезном примере — простом расширении с достаточно примитивной трансформацией.

European integration is the insurance policy against the oldest temptation of power: that a majority, however large, decides who does not belong. So countries across the continent agreed to share power across borders, and to answer to laws that none of them individually controlled.

The European parliament is where that promise is meant to be kept. Directly elected by nearly 360 million citizens, it co-writes the EU’s laws, elects the president of the European Commission and can dismiss the closest thing Europe has to a government – the commission itself. For decades, a grand coalition of centre-right parties and socialists, later joined by liberals and greens, governed it on that premise. They were committed to closer cooperation, the rule of law and maintaining a firewall against the far right.

Many hoped that the march of technology would usher in an egalitarian utopia – but some foresaw the threat it would pose to liberal society. Why did nobody listen?

One of the stranger things about this dizzying, headlong moment in time is that it doesn’t have much of a past. Everything is about the future of this, the future of that: the future of work, the future of humanity, the future of the planet. It’s as if everyone is screaming (some ecstatically, most terror-stricken): robots are taking over the world! Meanwhile, you can’t put down your phone, unplug, delete your AI apps, tell Zoom to piss off; it feels as if you are racing toward something, and can’t stop, or look back, or think straight.

But of course this weird moment in history does have a past. It comes from somewhere. It wasn’t inevitable. Things could have turned out differently. They still can. And if you look back, one thing you’ll see is that a lot of people saw this all coming. They foresaw our present when it was still the future. They thought it might turn out fabulously, a computer utopia. And they worried it might turn out disastrously. Above all, they issued warning after warning about the rise of what I call the artificial state, the replacement of the liberal democratic nation-state, the consent of the governed, with the rule of people by machines. They warned of a future in which democratic deliberation would be replaced by prediction by calculation, the public sphere would be supplanted by data-driven commerce, and drones would take the place of the demos. Why didn’t anyone listen?

The new underworld is made up of innocent and well-intentioned people who work with slide rules and calculating machines and computers which can retain an almost infinite number of bits of information as well as sort, categorise, and reproduce this information at the press of a button. Most of these people are highly educated, many of them are PhDs, and none that I have met have malignant political designs on the American public. They may, however, radically reconstruct the American political system, build a new politics, and even modify revered and venerable American institutions – facts of which they are blissfully innocent.
