On Aug. 5, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first mRNA-based vaccine for influenza. Health experts say the shot, made by Moderna, could have several advantages over traditional flu vaccines, but its approval comes at a time when federal health agencies have walked back recommending flu vaccines for many people.
In a study published in May 2026 in the New England Journal of Medicine that Moderna submitted to the FDA, the mRNA-based flu shot, called mFlusiva, was up to 27% more effective in preventing flu than any of four currently available flu shots. Among more than 40,000 people over age 50 who were randomly assigned to receive either mFlusiva or one of four existing flu shots, those who received a single dose of the mRNA flu vaccine were on average 27% less likely to have lab-confirmed influenza-like illness than those getting another type of flu shot.
“I think this is a historic event and incredibly exciting, both scientifically and from a public-health standpoint,” says Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, CEO of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
“Flu remains a significant public health challenge, and mFlusiva provides an important new option for America’s seniors,” said Stéphane Bancel, Moderna’s CEO.
Marrazzo says the mRNA-based flu vaccine is a gamechanger when it comes to matching influenza strains circulating at a given time and in a given region to the flu vaccine. The better the match, the more effective the shot in preventing flu and some of its serious consequences, including pneumonia, respiratory distress, and even organ failure in those who are most vulnerable to infections, which include older people, young children, and those with weakened immune systems.
Because the mRNA technology relies on a genetic plug-and-play model, in which different genetic sequences for any virus or pathogen can be switched into the vaccine, the shot takes around six weeks to develop. Current flu vaccines, on the other hand, take up to six months to create because they require growing the influenza virus in eggs before the virus is processed into the vaccine to activate the proper immune response.
Currently, the World Health Organization (WHO) convenes a group of influenza experts each year to study the flu that circulates among populations in the southern hemisphere of the globe to determine which strains of the virus should be targeted in a vaccine for the northern hemisphere, where colder climates generally contribute to worse flu seasons. Such analysis is reliable but not always accurate, and can lead to mismatches that produce weak vaccines. “We see this play out in [vaccine] efficacy that ranges anywhere from 50% to 60% in a good year to 20% in a not-so-good year,” says Marrazzo. But with an mRNA-based flu shot, manufacturers won't need as much lead time to develop the vaccine, and could therefore better track and match influenza strains causing disease in real time.
Moderna plans to have mFlusiva available in the fall as flu vaccine campaigns start, but only for a select group of people. The FDA approved the shot for people ages 50 and older, the group that recently-revised U.S. government guidelines say should be receiving flu shots every year. The current recommendations differ from previous guidelines, which advised that anyone six years and older, including pregnant women, should be vaccinated against both flu and COVID every year. While the CDC continues to make this recommendation on its website, in January, the Trump Administration revised this guidance for routine vaccination and instead shifted the decision to vaccinate to individual families and their physicians. Disagreeing with the change, many health organizations—including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists—continue to recommend yearly flu shots for most people.
The approval of the first mRNA flu vaccine is an important milestone for public health, says Marrazzo, but it's tempered by the current U.S. political environment that fuels skepticism about both the effectiveness and safety of vaccines in general, and about mRNA technology in particular. “We have never been technically at a more exciting time in terms of mRNA vaccines. There are all kinds of incredibly cool stuff happening," she says. "Yet in the public eye, we are taking five steps backward as trustworthy emissaries for the advancement of science, all due to the undermining of research and our credibility as trusted advisors.”
mFlusiva's road to approval exemplifies this now-fraught environment for vaccines in the U.S., after the FDA initially dropped it from review in February. The agency sent Moderna a “Refusal-to-File” letter, notifying the company that it would not review the vaccine and stating that the study did not provide a proper control arm against which to compare mFlusiva, and that using existing flu shots as comparators “does not reflect the best-available standard of care.” In prior discussions before submitting its request for approval, the FDA suggested that the company provide data comparing mFlusiva among those 65 years or older to higher dose flu vaccines for this older population, which is at higher risk of complications from flu. Moderna says it provided the additional data.
After receiving the Refusal-to-File letter, Moderna’s executives and scientists met with the FDA and agreed to seek full approval for people 50 to 64 years old, and accelerated approval for people 65 years or older, as well as conduct another study in the latter population. Under FDA’s accelerated approval, drugs can be approved sooner based on results of early benefit while further studies on longer term benefit are completed. Days after refusing to review the mRNA flu shot, the FDA decided to consider it for approval.
Marrazzo says she can’t think of another drug that experienced such about-face decisions from the FDA. “It’s hard to read as anything other than a political decision from above,” she says. “I don’t know for certain if that’s true, but that’s my supposition, if you trace back to Secretary [Robert F.] Kennedy’s overt hostility to mRNA vaccines. It’s a really good thing that there was a reconsideration and that science won out.” Kennedy, who heads the Department of Health and Human Services that oversees the FDA, is a longtime skeptic of vaccines. In 2025, he halted 22 projects, worth $500 million, focused on developing mRNA vaccines for respiratory diseases, including for pandemic flu.
Mixed signals from federal health authorities are contributing to confusion among the public, who are increasingly questioning the effectiveness and safety of vaccines, despite what scientists maintain is a strong track record of their benefit with relatively low risk. One of the reasons people are reluctant to get a flu shot is because of its sometimes weak effectiveness in protecting against symptoms. But an mRNA-based vaccine should improve on that since its shorter development time gives manufacturers a better chance of matching influenza strains in real time. “Will the public buy it? That’s another question entirely,” says Marrazzo.

The simplest tools are often the most useful, and debugging is a prime example of this.
There are many advanced debugging techniques, and while they all have their use cases, println debugging is still the #1 choice, whether you’re doing it manually or with the help of coding agents.

Inserting a println statement to inspect a program’s state is one of the first things novice developers do, even before they hear the word “debugging”. Years later, simple debug logging remains one of the most useful tools for diagnosing all sorts of problems in real codebases. And now, it’s also one of the favorite tools of coding agents.
The technique can be improved without losing its original simplicity. In fact, IntelliJ IDEA’s logpoints have long been a more capable superset of println debugging: While performing the same function, they can also be conditional, print stack traces, use hit counters and caller filters, be grouped, saved for later, and much more. If you try to imagine the most unusual debugging use case, chances are IntelliJ IDEA’s logpoints already have a feature for it (for example, did you know they can beep?).
In 2026.2, we’re taking logpoints further with several improvements focused less on specific use cases and more on strengthening the foundation:
All these features are supported in both local and remote JVM debug sessions.
Let’s look more closely at each of them.
For this demo, I set up a mini gRPC server/client scenario, in which we’re supposed to debug the server side. For those new to logpoints, the next post in this series will feature a detailed tutorial based on this project. For now, let’s examine the new features.
In this particular case, suspending the app with a regular breakpoint is useless. If we try to do so, the timeout expires quickly, and execution follows the cancellation path, hiding the state we were going to inspect.
So, instead of using a breakpoint, let’s log the state, preferably with a coding agent doing it for us:

The agent not only sets the logpoints but also executes the run configurations, summarizes the resulting logs, finds the bug, and cleans up after itself.

Since IntelliJ IDEA tracks which logpoints belong to the agent, the agent cannot accidentally change yours. It does have full control over its own logpoints, though, including toggling them and modifying any properties that you can. When changing state is necessary for reproducing the bug, IntelliJ IDEA lets agents do that, but the skill steers the agent to avoid side effects and prefer logpoints whenever possible.
Here’s a short video showing how that works:
In the example above, we’re running the agent through the AI chat, but the same works equally well with agents in the built-in terminal or outside the IDE. Once the skill is installed, it becomes available in the agent of your choice:

The workflow is the same, this time with Claude Code:

Setting logpoints manually now takes a single click: Select the expression to log, and then click in the gutter between any two executable lines. If the expression is not in front of you in the editor, you can enter a custom expression afterwards:

To find out which piece of code produced a specific line in the console, click the line and then select Open:

IntelliJ IDEA will show the Open button that brings you to the corresponding code in the editor. Additionally, if it comes from an instrumented logpoint, the IDE will show the stack trace of how it got there – you get the same information as with the Log stack trace option, but now without cluttering the console with noisy messages.
Many benefits of logpoints are shared across debuggers:
IntelliJ IDEA’s implementation has many advantages beyond the basics, but performance is what stands out in this release.
If you’ve ever put a conditional or logging breakpoint in a hot path, you’ve seen the cost. With the traditional JPDA/JDWP breakpoint model, every hit suspends the application, evaluates the condition/log expression, and then resumes execution. For occasional hits this is fine, but in hot paths, this standard model becomes a bottleneck.
The overhead of traditional Java logpoints is not just a nuisance. The delay could hide a latency-sensitive failure, make a race condition disappear, or throttle the application load in a way that masks the problem. There’s a real risk that you would be debugging behavior introduced by the debugger itself.
Some time ago, I wrote about ways to work around this. Luckily, IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2 makes these hacks obsolete by instrumenting the debugged code for conditional and logging breakpoints. This chart shows the results of our internal benchmarking:

In our test set, the improvement is around 30x, making logpoints usable again in timing-sensitive code. You keep the same logpoint workflow, and so do agents, now with the performance of a regular print statement.
The best part is, you don’t need to do any setup to enjoy this speedup. IntelliJ IDEA will automatically detect logpoints that can be instrumented and do so behind the scenes in the same debug session, with no restart required.
Logpoints are still the same simple idea that makes println debugging great: Obtain the right bit of information and put it in the most accessible place. And with the new pieces, this technique becomes even more useful for both developers and AI agents.
More agent skills and debugger capabilities are on the way. If there is a debugging workflow you would like agents to handle, tell us in the comments under this post. And if you have a concrete feature request for IntelliJ IDEA, please file it in our YouTrack so it doesn’t go unnoticed.
Happy debugging!
