Online sales reached their highest share of retail spending in five years last month as record heat fuelled demand for air conditioners, outdoor products and clothing.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the volume of retail sales in Great Britain rose 1% month on month in June, beating analysts’ expectations of a 0.3% decline, helped by hot weather and World Cup spending.

И вот, прочитав ту статью, я вспомнил, что у меня есть намного более антуражный источник мягкого УФ и что в своё время я и сам рассматривал в его лучах много интересного. Сам автор той статьи одобрил мою идею написать про данный артефакт, так что самое время рассказать и о нём.

Итак, сегодня вновь затронем тему изучения чего бы то ни было в УФ-лучах. Посмотрим в работе на один довольно интересный прибор, посмотрим на разные артефакты в этом свете, ну и, конечно, узнаем, как ещё можно использовать такой девайс дома. Как водится, будет много интересного, а местами ещё и красивого.

Vintage boutique owner Janelle Best has been rummaging in thrift shop bins since the 90s. When she started, she says, there was a stigma about it. “It was either you were a freak, or you were poor – and I was a freak.”

At first, she did it to source stage outfits while playing in psych-rock bands. Then, in 2005, she started “casually reselling” on eBay. Ten years later she was trading as Desert Stars Vintage at street markets, and by 2023 she had opened a showroom specializing in upmarket silk dresses in her Williamsburg apartment. Even just a few years ago, she says, she still put in the hours at places like Goodwill. The bins, she says, “were a field day. There were so many fucking bangers.” And then, thrifting became a social media craze, she says, “and the hell gates of high school students flooded in. Twelve people to each bin. Everyone fighting. Suddenly everyone’s a reseller, and instead of these kids intuitively knowing what’s good, they’re on their phones trying to figure out if it’s valuable.”

The South African singer reflects on love’s highs and lows on her second album, nimbly flipping between moods but with her voice always holding attention

From her penchant for paparazzi-baiting stunts – arriving at a recent London listening party in Y2K cosplay with this second album’s title temporarily tattooed across her lower back – to her music’s outsized mix of sun, sex and sultriness, 24-year-old South African Tyla seems keen to transport us back to more carefree times. On the head-knocking, Christina Milian-esque Mr Nonchalant, for example, she references her belly ring and tells a man she likes his eyes “cuz they match the thong”.

However, as with Rihanna, her constant point of comparison since emerging in 2024 with transatlantic smash Water, Tyla is able to nimbly traverse genres and reference points thanks to a characterful voice that suits every mood. On frustrated opener Is It Love she gives it the full-belt treatment, while on Chanel – an intoxicating fusion of R&B, amapiano and pop – she sits back, riding Nigerian-British producer P2J’s beats as if on a lilo with a cocktail in hand. Even when the rug is pulled out from under her on the shape-shifting banger Kiss, which careens between lithe Afrobeats shuffle and full-on dance-pop breakdown, Tyla manages to pull focus back to her at its centre.

US composer Keir GoGwilt’s collaborative album uses poetry and atonal music to trace the roots of Spain’s sarabande dance: a fascinating listen, though not easy

Classical music aficionados will be familiar with the stately form of the sarabande – a Spanish dance adopted into a languorous and tender musical style favoured by baroque composers such as Bach and Handel. For American composer Keir GoGwilt, however, the sarabande contains something far more radical. On his collaborative project The Zarabanda Variations, he enlists a 10-piece ensemble that combines free jazz with baroque strings and spoken-word poetry to delve into the colonial Latin American roots of the dance before it was popularised in 17th and 18th-century Spain.

On first listen, it’s hard to hear how this music could relate to the classical sarabande at all. Scrapes of atonal strings, clattering percussion, guttural vocalisations and sharp whistles create a cacophony of tension throughout, as if mirroring the passionate, whirling energy supposedly contained in the original forms of the dance. In fact, rather than creating a baroque sarabande fusion, GoGwilt’s compositions embrace its lesser-known historical references to produce something entirely new.

Maurizzi was world under-20 junior champion in 2023 and is the current French champion.

Sivanandan had beaten two GMs previously, but neither was as eminent as Maurizzi, and her result is a new world age record for a girl to defeat a grandmaster rated over 2600. The Frenchman held the advantage for the first 27 moves but then blundered into a tactic which won his queen for inadequate compensation.

За последний год в мире больших языковых моделей произошел заметный сдвиг. Если раньше основным предметом соревнования были знания модели — насколько хорошо она отвечает на вопросы (общие или специальные), знает факты или пишет код, — то со временем фокус сместился на способность рассуждать.

Практически каждый крупный релиз последних месяцев позиционируется как reasoning-модель. Производители говорят уже не столько о знаниях, сколько о способности строить длинные цепочки рассуждений, решать сложные задачи и принимать решения в условиях неопределенности.

Но вместе с этим возникает закономерный вопрос: а как объективно измерять reasoning?

Сколько времени вам нужно, чтобы сложить футболку? Секунды три, если аккуратно. Пять, если совсем аккуратно.

А теперь другой вопрос. Как вы думаете, сколько лет понадобилось мировой робототехнике, чтобы машина сложила ту же футболку сама — без жестко прописанной программы, без специальной оснастки, просто взяв мятую тряпку из корзины?

Отвечаю: примерно шестьдесят. Первый промышленный робот встал на конвейер General Motors в 1961 году, а уверенно складывающего белье робота впервые показали осенью 2024-го. И это, честно говоря, было событием покрупнее многих громких презентаций.

Не знаю как для вас, но для меня, с того самого первого момента, когда я стал интересоваться электроникой, существовала одна, скажем так, «загадочная» :-) сущность, разобраться в сути которой мне всегда было интересно — конденсаторы переменной ёмкости! 

Хотя бы даже по той простой причине, что в те далекие (почти уже былинные) времена, когда у меня впервые начали возникать вопросы подобного рода, переменные конденсаторы достать было весьма проблемно (для собственных экспериментов; несмотря на то, что они повсеместно присутствовали в «музыкальных центрах» (радиоприёмник + проигрыватель пластинок) прошлого — «радиола»-х). 

Да и, кроме того, в обыденной практике подобные конденсаторы не часто встречаются (как потребные для самоделок), что, опять же, уменьшает количество поводов с ними «пообщаться поплотнее» (хотя, если память мне не изменяет, их частенько предлагалось использовать в составе схем самодельных металлоискателей — будучи школьником я как раз пытался собрать нечто подобное, но отказался из-за отсутствия подобного конденсатора под рукой). 

Ну и в целом, как выясняется, переменные конденсаторы как класс представляют собой очень интересный объект для рассмотрения, чем мы сегодня и займёмся!

Imran Perretta always knew that the title of his debut feature film would be “Ish” – short for Ishmail, the name of the 12-year-old boy from Luton at the heart of his story. Only later did people point out the similarity to other coming-of-age films with three letters in the title: Kes by Ken Loach, and Satyajit Ray’s Apu trilogy. Now, as the reviews trickle in, the comparisons to Kes and Apu keep coming. Like them, Ish is a poetic film that grabs you by the heart and pulls you into a child’s perspective on the world.

The response has been lovely, says Perretta, and a relief. “It’s nice that people have compared Ish to those films rather than Kidulthood. I did worry about that.” Why, because it features kids speaking in slang and getting into scrapes? He nods. “I always say that I don’t read reviews, but of course I’ve read every single one. I can’t help myself. And we’ve been really lucky; the reviews have been amazing. A couple have been middling. Then you read them, and the subtext is: ‘I thought it was going to be like Kidulthood.’”

Australia’s medicines regulator has issued warnings for several type 2 diabetes and obesity-related treatments – including Ozempic and Mounjaro – over the potential to cause a “rare but severe” eye disorder that could lead to blindness.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration’s (TGA) warning came after several GLP-1 RA medicines marketed in Australia as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, among other products, were linked to 36 cases of the condition.

The ocean waters around the Galápagos Islands are hot. Very hot. Observed for centuries in the Pacific by fishers, the El Niño weather phenomenon begins when the prevailing trade winds slow, allowing warm water to spread east along the coast of South America. Right now, the pattern is in full flow and will build from this year into next, likely bringing record temperatures to an already overheating world.

If 2026 is not the hottest year on record, 2027 surely will be – and the Galápagos archipelago is in the centre of this climate crisis.

I’m sitting on my bedroom floor trying to fasten the sleeves back on to a new top that’s just been delivered. The town of Menton on the French Riviera is beautiful at any time of the year but becomes even more of a treat during the annual Lemon festival (Fête du Citron, 10-28 February 2027). Its microclimate, courtesy of the Alps to the north blocking colder winds, gives Menton lemons a distinct fragrance, flavour and quality that set them apart. For me, the event transformed a damp cold UK winter into a fortnight of colour, taste and light. There were food tastings, salads made with lemons, tarts, cakes and pies all full of zesty colour and flavour at stalls and markets in the town. There are sculptures made from citrus fruit, parades and exhibitions in the Golden Garden of Light (Jardins Biovès). More than a food festival, it’s a celebration of what nature can give to the world.

As an eight-year-old in comfortable, solid, suburban California, Michael Cunningham felt compelled to make art before he quite understood what it was, or could do: a painting of souls ascending to heaven, for example, in which paradise resembled the Griffith Park Observatory and the dead were all depicted in profile because their creator felt unequal to the challenge of full faces. There was also a cigar box covered in gold-sprayed macaroni and a clay representation of the animals on Noah’s Ark – anything, in fact, that would challenge the painting of a placid white chicken that hung in a gilt frame on his parents’ wall.

If Cunningham moved on fairly rapidly from the visual arts, either sparing or denying us the fruits of a more fully formed talent, it wasn’t because the impulse to create had withered. Rather, it was that the experience of making material art had functioned as a temporary outlet, being less painful, less embarrassing – both emotions he ascribes to his young, sensitive self – than attempting to capture the world in words.
