The Case Against Using Alcohol and Cannabis to Sleep

Good sleep is crucial to healthy functioning. If we don’t get enough sleep or if it’s of insufficient quality, we often have problems the next day. We may have a harder time concentrating or may feel irritable and sluggish. If sleep problems persist, as they do for up to one in three adults, those individuals are at risk for a range of serious physical and mental health difficulties, including problems with heart and circulatory systems, issues with thinking and memory, as well as respiratory and immune disorders.

A substantial number of Americans turn to cannabis and alcohol to help them fall asleep. Indeed, there are estimates that nearly one in 10 Americans regularly use cannabis for sleep, and many adults report using alcohol in this way. Sadly, these rates are higher for young adults.

While cannabis and alcohol may seem to assist in sleep, these substances offer a cheap trick. While they can initially make a person feel sleepy, they don’t produce the kind of restorative sleep humans need to function well. In fact, researchers warn that regular use not only weakens healthy sleep but increases the risk of dependence.

Philip Gehrman is a psychologist and professor who directs the Sleep Neurobiology and Psychopathology lab at the University of Pennsylvania. I asked him what he thought of the use of these substances for sleep. “As alcohol is metabolized, it is broken down into compounds that disrupt sleep and lead to more wakefulness in the night. So, any benefit at the beginning of the night is not worth the price you pay the rest of the night,” he said. “There is much less research on cannabis, but it has a similar pattern to alcohol. Plus, if you use either alcohol or cannabis as a coping strategy to improve sleep, it increases the chances of becoming dependent on them.”

I also reached out to Lisa Fucito, a professor of psychiatry at Yale and the director of the Tobacco Treatment Service at Smilow Cancer Hospital.“Alcohol, cannabis, and other psychoactive substances do not address the behavioral and cognitive processes that perpetuate insomnia,” she said. “While these substances may provide short-term sedation, their sleep effects tend to diminish with tolerance in as little as a few days and can worsen sleep continuity and quality.” Tolerance can develop within days, and is often followed by rebound sleep disruption in the second half of the night.

As a psychologist, I venture that most people who use substances to sleep are trying to help, not harm, themselves. They are likely not informed about the potential damaging effects of these substances or their ineffectiveness.

The research evidence overwhelmingly supports that cognitive behavioral therapy is a safer, more effective long-term solution for many sleep difficulties, even if it lacks the appeal of a quick fix. This can help address the root cause of behaviors such as spending excessive time in bed awake, maintaining irregular sleep schedules, and conditioned arousal such as worrying about sleep.

Noelle Smith is a psychologist and vice-president of clinical care at Moona Health, which specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia via telehealth. “The good news is that insomnia is highly treatable,” she said. Cognitive behavioral therapy teaches skills like establishing a consistent sleep schedule, strengthening the connection between bed and sleep, and changing the unhelpful worries that keep people awake. “The results are more durable than medication and other substances with fewer side effects,” Smith added, “so people see lasting improvement in their ability to fall and stay asleep.”

It’s possible that some of us who are struggling with sleep-related issues may not have the time or money to seek formal services. Fortunately, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD and the Department of Defense’s National Center for Telehealth and Technology developed free evidence-informed mobile apps that anyone can use alone or in conjunction with their health care provider. These apps can assist in learning effective ways to increase healthy sleep.

To be sure, there are a wide range of sleep complaints and disorders including, but not limited to, insomnia, breathing, and movement disorders. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine launched the Sleep is Good Medicine campaign to increase public education about the importance of sleep and its connection to health. They offer a wealth of resources such as a podcast called Talking Sleep and tips on talking to one’s doctor about sleep.

Given that sleep-related difficulties are so widespread, please know that you are not alone. Effective strategies exist, and using alcohol or cannabis to sleep is counterproductive.

About 20,000 unaccompanied minors will lose legal representation if the federal government ends a longstanding contract on Friday, kicking current problems into overdrive across US

Inside an immigration court in lower Manhattan, the faces of migrant children – some as young as three – have been beamed on to a video screen throughout the summer as they faced deportation hearings. Most appeared virtually. Some sat around desks in a classroom, others bounced on bunk beds or rocked in chairs inside small offices or storage closets.

Detained in nearby shelters for unaccompanied minors in New York, the vast majority did not have lawyers as they appeared before the court.

Trump’s campaign of repression echoes the red scare. But now the government has bigger ambitions and more powerful tools

There are many parallels between the first McCarthy era, roughly 1946 to 1956, and Trump’s campaign of political repression, his own updated McCarthyism.

Both regimes crafted a monster of quasi-facts and innuendo and fed it with fear: an enemy within, well-organized and financed, secretive and violent, allied with evil foreigners and bent on overthrowing capitalism, democracy and Christian morality. Both used flagrantly unconstitutional means to cleanse the nation of the spectral menace.

I have spent much of my career studying boreal forests and I know fire is part of how they renew themselves. That knowledge did nothing for the lump in my throat last week as wildfires closed in on my community in northwestern Ontario.

Over 150 fires were burning in the region almost at once, displacing at least 1,800 people from more than a dozen communities, most of them Indigenous. Namaygoosisagagun First Nation burned to the ground, its residents narrowly escaping by boat.

Diaa al-Awadi claimed insulin was a fraud, smoking was safe and chemotherapy useless. But despite losing his medical licence and dying at early age, his reach continues to grow

It had been a struggle with conventional treatments. For Fatima Adel, a 50-year-old author living in Cairo’s upmarket Sheikh Zayed neighbourhood, the misdiagnoses and medical errors she had experienced had began to erode her confidence in doctors.

But when the videos of Diaa al-Awadi began circulating – an Egyptian doctor who spoke plainly, invoked the Qur’an, and told his audience that their bodies could heal themselves if they changed their diet – Adel, like tens of thousands of other Egyptians, listened.

At least 57 people have died trying to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta after as many as 50,000 migrants entered the tiny territory from Morocco in what Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, called “a violation of Spain’s territorial integrity”.

The huge influx, which took place over the course of just 24 hours, overwhelmed the city of 85,000 people, triggered a political crisis for Madrid and led to a mixed reaction from other EU countries, including calls for Spain to be suspended from the Schengen free-movement zone.

Oracle

My family is coming apart – so it’s time for one last video game session | Dominik Diamond

I wanted our last family games night to be the best fun we’ve ever had. Maybe we should have stuck with Mario Kart …

It is the end of an era for the Diamond family. For 20 years, there have been five of us living together. It has not been easy. Militant vegan daughters, sons who have inherited Scottish tempers, and a youngest child who attracts trouble like an industrial magnet, have meant our house has been conflict-laden at times. Throw in the fact that we are beset with all manner of mental health bobbins and chronic illnesses that resulted in two of our three kids almost dying in hospitals and you get a family that is combustible – but extremely close.

Through it all, we had games. They always brought us back together. Not just us all hunkering over Super Mario Kart like some kind of UN-mandated family therapy, but the conversations that happen when any of us spy another playing something new. Games are a cultural touchstone that helped us crack through the veneer of disagreements and distrust and remind us that we have more things in common than we sometimes feel.

The novelist on learning empathy from Charles Dickens, the playfulness of Irenosen Okojie and avoiding Jane Austen

My earliest reading memory
I was eight when I was given The Water-Babies by Charles Kingsley, after being moved from my grandmother’s care to live with my mother and her husband, who I barely knew. The story is about leaving one world, adapting to another. Surviving. It gave shape to unnamed feelings and developed my survival imagination: imagining beyond my circumstances.

My favourite book growing up
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. I followed David’s journey from exclusion to belonging. Dickens vivifies his characters; you grow alongside them. The novel taught me empathy, and that some relationships sustain us while others must be left behind.

England’s Georgia Hunter Bell won the women’s 800m final in style to claim her first Commonwealth Games medal

Boxing: Scarlett Savannah Delgado of Canada and Preeti Preeti of India will contest the women’s 54kg final after winning their respective semi-finals. England’s Lauren Mackie and Zambia’s Catherine Mwape will fight for bronze.

Up next it’s a 65kg home nations derby between Kaci Rock (Northern Ireland) and Caitlin Rainey (Scotland). Rock is the daughter of the former Irish boxer Jim Rock (the only man to hold Irish titles in four different weight divisions) and idolised Katie Taylor growing up. Initially her father tried to dissuade Rock from taking up boxing. “Sometimes when your mum and dad tell you you can’t do something, you want to do it more and I think that’s what happened,” she told BBC Sport.
